Dr. Welch 's responsibilities include the research/research support of vegetable grafting as an alternative to methyl bromide by:

• Finding and grafting various disease-resistant rootstocks/scions of tomato, pepper, and melon, evaluating fruit yields and sugar content.
• Evaluating the grafts against major soil/foliar diseases and nematode pressures in the greenhouse and field.
• Evaluating the translocation of disease resistance between scion and rootstock.
• Identifying key metabolites by PCR to evaluate their translocation from rootstock to scion and into the fruit.
