Dr. Serrano's responsibilities include:

  • Identifying or verifying the identification of citrus plant pests such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
  • Working with State Officials, Scientists, ARS, and APHIS in the epidemiological investigations of citrus pathogens and pests.
  • Maintaining accurate files on Disease Incidence Reports, Risk Assessments, and Quarantine Maps.
  • Making recommendations to eradicate and control the spread of citrus canker based on field and laboratory analysis.
  • Assembling and preparing scientific and related materials on citrus diseases and related topics for use in updating the programs instructions and guidelines.
  • Remaining aware of scientific developments within the discipline of plant pathology and related fields.
  • Coordinating training activities.
  • Training employees on disease identification techniques.
  • Overseeing safety aspect of the laboratory and ensuring OSHA compliance.
  • Serving as women's coordinator for PPQ employees in the state of Florida.
