Denise Thomas worked at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) Investigation and Diagnostic Center in New Zealand learning molecular techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR and gel electrophoresis for identification of exotic invasive pests and pathogens. Her projects included designing and testing primers for Tomato black ring virus and testing primers on a species of subterranean termite. In addition, she observed the New Zealand importation system and the protocol used during an incursion.
